Jim Daley, is a forty-something DI working for Strathclyde Police, based in Paisley.
He has issues: a wayward wife; burgeoning waistline; stalled career; unconventional assistant, in the shape of DS Brian Scott- generally, the feeling that everything is turning out in the opposite way to the life he once envisaged. In essence, existence has become a repetitive grind, from which he longs to escape.
When a woman's body is discovered near a small town on Scotland's West Coast, his life is set to change. With the scrutiny and support of the city far away, he is catapulted into society- that while only one hundred and fifty miles away from his home- is a very different place. Everyone knows everyone else, and seemingly, everything. Gossip and rumour are rife, and strangers-policemen included- are viewed with a mixture of disdain, suspicion, or downright hostility.
The town though, hides dark secrets, matters well beyond the horizon of idle banter and speculation; a bleak underbelly he does not suspect.
Superintendent Donald, his charismatic superior, expects results; more worried about the investigation budget and possible damage to his own ascent of the slippery pole, he provides his weary DI with the bare minimum of resources to work with. Add to this unexpected problems at the local police station, as well as the sudden arrival of his beautiful, yet challenging, spouse- well, Jim Daley has his work cut out.
Sprinkled throughout with every shade of humour, and set against the backdrop of Scotland's glorious western seaboard in Springtime; the investigation plays out. Love, life, betrayal and death await, as DI Daley embarks on an investigation that becomes more dangerous and personal than he could ever have imagined..,,
More- much more-soon.
