HERE IS THE FIRST NEWSPAPER INTERVIEW ON MY NEW NOVEL!
Gartocharn man set to publish debut novel
Nov 2 2012 by Andrew Galloway, Lennox Herald
Scotland has already produced two leading fictional detectives in Jim Taggart and John Rebus.
But a Gartocharn man could be about to add another one to the ranks as his debut novel gets set to hit the shelves.
Former cop Denzil Meyrick will publish his debut novel, ‘Whisky from Small Glasses’ tomorrow (Thursday), introducing DCI Jim Daley to the literary scene.
The story is of how city sleuth DCI Daley travels to a fictional rural town to investigate a series of grizzly murders.
Denzil said: “The story reflects the force changes that are about to be implemented in Scotland, with the regional forces being merged into one large national force.
“But it also lets the reader into DCI Daley’s marriage and his relationship with his boss.
“I had a couple of false starts while I was writing the novel but things really took off in about mid-2010. I finally finished it in early 2012.
“I wouldn’t say it is totally inspired by my time in the police but that certainly played a part.
“I actually set out to write a historical novel but I soon discovered that anyone who wants to do that has to take on a serious amount of homework.
“It would have been a shame to do all the necessary research and then find I can’t write a full novel.
“I am a big fan of TV series like The Sopranos, which combines humour with a more serious aspect, and that’s something I aim to replicate in my literature.”
Denzil was inspired to pick up his pen after an illness meant that he was unable to carry on working.
And having enjoyed getting his first novel published, his second may not be too far away, with work already well in progress.
“I’ve always wanted to write a novel. I was involved in business for quite a long time, as well as my time in the police, but then I contracted two serious bouts of arthritis.
“That meant that I couldn’t work any more and writing a novel was about the only thing I could do, so I sat down and got to work.
“I’ve previously managed a distillery, owned a pub and been a marketing affairs director as well as being in the police – quite an eclectic career.
“I’m pleased to say that work has already started on the second novel.
“I think I’m about a third of the way through it and it is progressing very well.
“It has the working title ‘Ghosts in the Gloaming’ and is a continuation of ‘Whisky from Small Glasses, set about a month later.”
Denzil will launch the book on Thursday, November 8 at the Berkeley Suite at 237 North Street, Glasgow.
