Magazines, Waterstones, Kindle and TV

Any of you who know me will be more than aware that to say I'm camera shy is putting it mildly.

In the last few months, it feels as though I have been thrust before the lens more often than at any other time in my life. Press photoshoots, personal appearances, or simply for social networking purposes; there I'll be, grimacing at the little black box, wishing I was somewhere else (preferably Tuscany), as I'm being cajoled by an enthusiastic snapper to turn this way, or that.

Tomorrow however, is the daddy of them all, as I face the TV cameras for the first time...oh dear. As soon as it's done and dusted, I will be able to tell you when and where to watch this monumental footage. Suffice it to say, I am approaching this event with what can best be described as mild panic. I will write over the next few days to let you know how I get on. Will it be success, or utter meltdown?

On another subject, I am pleased to say that Whisky From Small Glasses is now available throughout Waterstones' Scottish stores, as well as at a great new special offer price as an ebook on Kindle.

Also, read more about the book in an review and feature in the June issue of the excellent Scots Magazine, out today!! It's a privilege to appear in the world's oldest magazine.

D.A. Meyrick

Tuesday 28th May
Alexandria Library
7.30 pm
Denzil Meyrick.
D.A. Meyrick studied politics before joining Strathclyde police, where he served in Glasgow. After being forced to leave ‘the job’ by ill health, he entered the world of business, performing roles as diverse as a distillery manager, marketing director of an engineering company, freelance journalism, owning and running his own leisure, PR and sales company, as well as being proprietor of a public house. After being laid low by illness, and, for a time virtually unable to walk, he decided to try and realise a lifetime’s ambition by writing a novel. Whisky From Small Glasses is the result. It is a taut crime/thriller, set in Kintyre. Drawing from the best of Scottish and Nordic noire, as well as influences from recent US and Scandinavian television drama; the novel is multi-layered, cinematic, compelling and visceral, shot through with a large measure of dark humour. It has proved a huge success since publication in November 2012, reaching the top 25 of the Kindle crime/mystery/thriller detective rankings, as well as high acclaim from the press, including the coveted ‘Book of the Week’ accolade in The Herald over Christmas and New Year. Denzil lives locally and we are delighted to showcase his début novel.

Another Taster: Back in Kinloch.

Last week I put up a small extract from my new novel The Death of Remembrance - since then I have been deluged by readers wanting more... well, just for you:

"His heart thudded against his chest in an alarming way, causing nearly as much discomfort as the tight boots on his feet. He trudged on.
‘We’re nearly there, darling,’ her voice was clear - she was not in the least out of breath. ‘Another ten minutes and we’ll get a seat and open the flask.’
‘I…’ his breathing was very laboured, ‘I…’
‘Don’t try to speak until we stop, my love, or you might not get there at all,’ she said light-heartedly. ‘It’ll be worth it in the end - you’ll see.’ She bounded ahead as he was forced to stop yet again and gulp down a lungful or two of cold air.

Half an hour later he was beginning to feel just about normal. They were sitting atop a grassy mound, which itself constituted the summit of Ben Saarnie, a modest hill that overlooked Kinloch. The town lay before them like a miniature toy land; traffic, buildings and people looking busy, yet somehow pointless at this remove. He realised what a local he was becoming as he found himself able to recognise some of the cars and vans, picturing their occupants. Never let it be said that Jim Daley was not observant.
‘This was the site of an iron-age fort.’ She was taking photographs with an expensive digital reflex camera. ‘Strange to think that people, hundreds of years ago, stood exactly here - breathing this air - just being alive. Don’t you think, darling?’
At that exact moment, all of his concentration was focused upon removing a Penguin chocolate biscuit from its most recalcitrant packaging - his reward for the struggle up the hill. So, he employed his habitual reply when he had not quite heard what had been said -  something between a grunt and word, ambiguous enough to be taken as the coherent answer of someone who was actually paying attention. ‘Uhmm-uh.’
‘I think I’ll get my tits out; it’s a really liberating feeling at this height – do you fancy a quickie?’- she smiled as she watched his continued attempt to get at the confectionery.
At last! He had broken into the wrapper and thought he better reply before he set about the contents. ‘Absolutely, Liz - aye whatever,’ he then devoured half of the confection with one bite.
‘You’ve not been listening again,’ she said, with I told you so intonation.
‘Eh? - wha’ you shay?’ he spat out a few crumbs as he looked up at her, mouth full of chocolate.
‘Nothing, Jim,’ she laughed, putting the view-finder back to her eye. ‘Just you enjoy some more empty calories.’
Suddenly the biscuit tasted sour in his mouth. This little hike was part of the ‘fitness’ campaign that his wife had so generously devised for him. She reckoned that with regular exercise combined with an excruciatingly austere dietary regime, he would be able to lose at least four stones before the spring. This was week three: and despite enormous blisters on his feet and a gnawing hunger that never abated, he had managed to shed a paltry two pounds.
Undeterred, his spouse had shrugged her shoulders at the most recent weigh-in on their newly acquired bathroom scales, declaring that: ‘The first few pounds are always the toughest to get rid of - after then - plain sailing.’
He wondered how she was so sure of this, as in the many years he had known her she had never put on as much as one ounce of weight and had never been on a diet in the whole of her life. However, to please her, and to bask in the fleeting joy of virtuousness, he continued to suffer the sore feet and the rumblings from his large intestine. Yuletide beckoned though, with the prospect of calorific indulgence combined with general slobbery, never mind the immersion in various types of alcohol. He tried not to think about it.
The air was cold and exhilarating as they trudged down the hill, Daley’s knees throbbing in time to the rumble of his poorly nourished belly. There seemed to be a kind of blueness in the firmament, framing everything in a light that could only be that of early winter. The still water of the loch below appeared more viscous than the sea should be; the scene was calm, cold and glorious. Daley hadn’t noticed all of this on the way up as he had been concentrating on reaching the summit without expiring; he had to admit though, his surroundings - even some parts of the experience of walking - were stimulating. Was he beginning to fall into step with his wife’s pursuits at last?
Well, one step at a time."*

Kinloch: to infinity and beyond!!

Here's hoping that Spring is really on the way and we have managed to weather the icy grip of winter. This is especially true of Kintyre, where the last week has seen the good folk of the real Kinloch struggle in Arctic temperatures without heat, light and ample food supplies - not to mention a dearth of information and a shameful lack of coverage of their plight by the mainstream media.

I know I've blogged on about this before, however it seems to me that Kintyre is all too often a forgotten realm, somewhere bordering on myth and legend where TV, radio and print journalists risk being turned to stone, should they be brave enough to to head south of Tarbert!

When I first sent Whisky From Small Glasses out to agents, one bold luminary informed me that, while my book was excellent, the location and the local dialect used would ensure that nobody would want to read it.

'Where is this Kintyre, anyway?' - he asked. 'Far better you change the location to North Yorkshire - or Cornwall, perhaps...'

Now that Jim Daley is about to reach a whole new - even worldwide - audience, via exciting and ongoing developments, I trust he is eating his words.

Here's to you Kintyre! May all your snows be merely 'dustings'!

Rubbing shoulders with giants!

I am proud to say that I will be appearing alongside the cream of the Scottish literary scene in the 'Booked' festival, which will take place in May.

I will share a platform with William McIlvanney, the father of Scottish crime fiction; legendary writer and artist, Alasdair Gray; The Herald's Literary editor, Rosemary Goring;  historian and bestselling author, Trevor Royle; and last, but most certainly not least, former Booker Prize judge and recipient of the Saltire Society's Book of the Year award, the peerless, Allan Massie.

This select body represent the very pinnacle of Scottish literature - just meeting them will be a thrill. Coincidentally, and most fortunately, I have read and hugely enjoyed the work of all of the above. Indeed, without the inspiration from the likes of Massie and McIlvanney, it is most unlikely I would ever have put pen to paper in the first place.

I will have to be on form - maybe a dram from a small glass before I start!

The official media launch will be in the next couple of weeks, and will be featured in the likes of The Herald, BBC and The Scotsman.

Meanwhile...

Taster from the next book!

I know lots of you - especially at home in Kintyre - are beset by difficulties caused by the dreadful weather. I hope they will be able to get the power on soon!

Here's a wee extract from the next DCI Daley, Kinloch novel, The Death of Remembrance.

Here's to sunnier days!!

"He opened the trunk; inside, a terrified woman lay on her side, she was trussed in a kneeling position, her wrists tied behind her back to her ankles. The thick duct tape plastered over her mouth left only the merest whimper audible. Tears flowed from her wide terrified eyes, making her mascara run into the mucus from her nose.
With strong arms, he pulled her from the vehicle by the rope, letting her fall onto the roadway, again on her side - the yell of pain she felt sounding only faintly behind the plastic tape.
Her head throbbed and her vision blurred. She could feel the rain on her skin; the bang on the head, stunned her. Randomly, her mind scrolled back to a trip to miserably wet Largs when she had been a child - she could see her mother’s face.
He bent forward and manoeuvred the sobbing woman onto her knees to face forwards, then grabbed her roughly by her long, dyed-blonde hair, pulling her chin up to make sure she was looking along the pathway and up the three front steps to her home. She was forced to breathe heavily through her nose, partly through fear, partly necessity as mucus was beginning to block her nasal passages - the duct tape making breath through her mouth impossible.
‘There ye’ are darlin’,’ his voice was calm yet rasping, strangely unfamiliar, now  she had become accustomed to the Aussie twang. ‘Just thought I’d gie ye a wee look at yer man,’ he sniggered. ‘Naw at his best the now, right enough - eh?’ He tugged at her hair again, as silent sobs racked her body.
He pulled up his jacket and produced a handgun from the waistband of his trousers.
She thought of her mother again: the hand wiped the rain from her face as they stood facing the cold grey sea, holding her close to keep her dry. The image of the blood-soaked hallway and the ruined figure within became more like the memory.
‘Cheerio, ye fuckin’ pair o’ rats.’
The one shot from the pistol sent its report echoing down the quiet suburban street and a bullet through her temple.
He walked slowly back to the car, paused, then looked up at something unseen, smiled, then jumped in, before he sped off, tyres squealing on the wet tarmac.
The dead woman’s lifeless eyes stared blankly at the ground on which she knelt, head forward, all memories gone."

If Jim Daley thought he was going to lead a quieter life in his new job in Kinloch, he was wrong!

Win a prize!

I was contacted the other day by the first person to spot the nod to a very famous crime novel within the text of Whisky From Small Glasses.

This little tribute to one of the world's greatest - and I guess now, not  widely read, novelists - occurred to me when trying to resolve a pivotal passage of the plot. How could I make this dramatic, yet believable? It's a tiny tick, hard to spot - the realisation was all.

The gentleman who spotted this was elderly - I wonder if this is any coincidence; he was also from Canada, which may be another - if somewhat tenuous - clue.

Literally, if you blink, you'll miss it! It is the merest nuance; however, I know that the eagle-eyed amongst you will be on the case.

As a little incentive, I'll think up a small prize for the winner. Contact me via 'twitter' - @Lochlomonden is my handle on there. With no attempt at originality, I'll put the correct answers in a hat and draw the winner.

So, a mystery within a mystery. You have until mid-day next Tuesday (GMT).

Good luck!!

(Incidentally, WC, I'm shocked that you didn't manage to pick this up- you know, what with your immense intellect, and all :)

Campbeltown Loch I Wish You Were Whisky!

Many years ago, in the dim and now distant past, I found myself working as a manager in a distillery in Campbeltown - Springbank, no less, now one of the most sought after and expensive Single Malts in the world.

Of course, being Campbeltown, the distillery was packed to the rafters not only with great whisky, but also wonderful characters. I often used to go home at nights, my sides sore with laughter; it was probably the best job I have ever had. I'm not ashamed to say that more than one of the characters in Whisky From Small Glasses, find at least part of their origins in Springbank, all those years ago.

So, John MacD, Alec, Ranald, Peter, Mrs C, Katie, Agnes, Jim, Margaret, May, Jenny, Hector... the list goes on: I salute you! The next time I have the pleasure of having a dram in my hand, I'll raise a glass to you all - sadly too many of you, now absent friends.

Who knows, if Whisky From Small Glasses continues to sell, I might even be able to afford to toast you all with a glass of Springbank - though such riches may be some way off!

While browsing the internet a couple of years ago I came across this in ITN's archive. It's a short piece, carried on the News At Ten in 1989. Eagle eyed readers may be interested to catch a glimpse of the author of Whisky From Small Glasses in his pomp! (Clue: I've got a tie on.)

Also, any of my blog readers from the 'Wee Toon'  will spot many a well kent face.

Just click on the link, then scroll down and click the play button.

And don't forget, in amidst this outright nostalgia, you can all get a wee taste of the magic of Kintyre by reading Whisky From Small Glasses.

It is no coincidence that the novel is entitled thus.
